Why do students flock to the online learning environment? With over 4 million students are enrolled in online schools and universities (and that number is growing 30% per year), there are many compelling arguments for attending a cyber classroom (Lewis, 2005).

Students can "attend" a course at anytime, from anywhere. This means that parents can attend to their children, then sit down to class; working students can attend classes no matter what their work schedule might be, folks that travel for business or pleasure can attend class from anywhere in the world that has internet access.

Online learning enables student-centered teaching approaches. Every student has their own way of learning that works best for them. Some learn visually others do better when they "learn by doing."

Course material is accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Students have the ability to read and re read lectures, discussions, explanations and comments. Often spoken material in the classroom passes students by due to a number of distractions, missed classes, tiredness or boredom.

In an online environment, attendance to class is only evident if the student actually participates in classroom discussion. This increases student interaction and the diversity of opinion, because everyone gets a say, not just the most talkative.

Online instructors come with practical knowledge and may be from any location across the globe. This allows students to be exposed to knowledge that can't be learned in books and see how class concepts are applied in real business situations.

Using the internet to attend class, research information and communication with other studentsteaches skills in using technologies that will be critical to workers in the 21st century business community that works with colleagues globally and across time zones.

Participating online is much less intimidating than "in the classroom." Anonymity provides students a level playing field undisturbed by bias caused by seating arrangement, gender, race and age. Students can also think longer about what they want to say and add their comments when ready. In a traditional class room, the conversation could have gone way past the point where the student wants to comment.

Because online institutions often offer "chat rooms" for informal conversation between students, where student bios and non class discussions can take place, there appears to be a increased bonding and camaraderie over traditional class environments.

The online environment makes instructors more approachable. Students can talk openly with their teachers through online chats, email and in newsgroup discussions, without waiting for office hours that may not be convenient. This option for communication provides enhanced contact between instructors and students.

Online course development allows for a broad spectrum of content. Students can access the school's library from their PC's for research articles, ebook content and other material without worries that the material is already "checked out."

Students often feel that they can actually listen to the comments made by other students. Becauseeveryone gets a chance to contribute, students are less irritated with those that "over contribute" and can ask for clarification of any comments that are unclear.

Over 75% of colleges and universities in the U.S. offer online degree programs, with online degrees as respected as "on the ground" degrees. (Lewis)

Online classrooms also facilitate team learning by providing chatrooms and newsgroups for meetings and joint work. This eliminates the problems of mismatched schedules, finding a meeting location and distributing work for review between meetings.

Students often comment that online learning lets them attend class when fully awake and attend in increments of convenient time block, rather than rigid 2 or 4 hour stretches once or twice a week.

Because there are no geographic barriers to online learning, students can find a diversity of course material that may not be available to them where they live or work. This is especially true for professional training such as medical billing training or purchasing training and for students in remote rural areas that cannot support college or vocational training centers.

While "brick and mortar" institutions will never be eliminated, it's easy to see why a growing number of people are attending class in the cyber world. They may be reasons of accessibility, flexibility or quality, all compelling and contributing to the attractiveness of this mode of learning.
Online education is more common than ever. In fact many educators and policy makers view online education as the wave of the future. Is an online graduate degree program right for you? Consider the pros and cons of an online graduate program.

Advantages of Online Education:

Accessibility: Attend online classes from anywhere.

Flexiblity: Work when it make sense for you - at night, morning, wee-hours. You're not tied to a class schedule (usually)

nterpersonal Breadth: Your peers will include students all over the country and even the world. My online students have included military personnel working overseas as well as adults in many countries.
Cost: An online education does not require that you relocate to a new place or that you forgo full time work.

Documentation: Documents, transcripts, live discussions and training materials are all archived and recorded so that they can be retrieved via mail, e-mail or the school's website for reading, downloading, and printing.

Access: Instructors are also available, respond quickly through email, and generally are prepared to work with diverse students with a range of lifestyles and needs.

Disadvantages of Online Education:

Employment: You may find that you have to discuss the validity of your degree. Information about the school's accreditation and, if needed, copies of syllabi and sample assignments will convince employers.
Communications: Most of your communication will be through email. You might miss the sound of an instructor or peer's voice.

Courses: Not all courses of study are easily available online. If you're interested in a more unusual field, you may have difficulty finding a source for online education.

A new monthly magazine named Women’s Panorama was launched on November 11 at Guwahati Press Club. Published by the Shillong-based Eastern Panorama group of publications, Women’s Panorama is a magazine “dedicated for the women of Northeast India”.

Inaugurating the first issue (November 2011) of Women’s Panorama, eminent filmmaker from Assam, Manju Bora, expressed hope that the magazine will emerge as a trusted platform for all walks of women in the region.

The award winning film director and also an acclaimed author, Bora, however, rejected the conventional idea of a woman magazine to be confined to some recipes, make-up and fashion tips. She stated that the magazine should enlighten the readers about various field of activities, which will help them to get empowered.

Mentioning some national woman magazines like Femina, Savvy, Women’s Era and Nandini, Priyo Sakhi, Barnali, Mondakini in Assamese, Bora agreed that those have helped thereaders to get enlightened.

“But we have to do more. The women's issue should be reflected in proper perspective. I hope Women's Panorama can bring a real change,” she concluded.

Addressing the gathering Harsh Jhunjhunwala, editor-in-chief of Women’s Panorama described the initial plan for the magazine and assured the readers a sensitive, balanced and comprehensive product every month, a press note informed.

Women’s Panorama editor, Sonata Dkhar, highlighted the focus areas of the magazine and mentioned her pledge to bring various burning issues related to millions of women in the 'alienated and trouble-torn region of the country’.

A number of journalists, writers, social activists and contributors to Women's Panorama were also felicitated during the event, which was presided over by N Thakuria.

A minute’s silence was also observed in memory of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who had passed away on November 5 in Mumbai. Paying tribute to the legendary cultural icon, the launch of Women’s Panorama, earlier scheduled for November 7, 2011 was postponed.

Assam on 2-yr school mission

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> Guwahati, Nov. 18: Government schools in Assam will be able to compete with private schools within two years, particularly in the rural and semi-rural areas of the state, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised today.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Sarma was reacting to a query on why Dispur was not taking action against private schools which were, among other things, flouting rules and fleecing students.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The minister promised that its 50,000-plus government schools will boast of better infrastructure, “quality and motivated” faculty, relevant vocation courses and English-friendly curriculum within two years.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The education department has already launched a cleansing drive to check unfair practices in the education department.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Sarma, however, said it was difficult for it to launch a crackdown against private schools which are not going by the book on the parameters of infrastructure or working condition of teachers.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“But I can assure you that within two years, we will be able to compete with private schools especially in rural and semi-rural areas where private schools have a significant presence,” Sarma said.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“For example, around one lakh teachers, who have qualified teacher eligibility test, will be recruited by us. Then the post of an estimated one lakh serving teachers will be provincialised, motivating them to give their best. We are also establishing over 85 model schools, each at the cost of Rs 5 crore, in educationally backward blocks along the lines of Navodaya. Moreover, we are already cracking down on corrupt and errant education department staffers.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A peek into the government school sector in the state will suggest that the recent measures to improve the situation were long overdue.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For example, a recent report of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan on Assam, claims that it has 14,979 schools with “adverse” pupil-teacher ratio, 6,388 single-teacher schools, 241 schools which do not have their own buildings, 9,958 schools without potable water and 31,069 schools without common toilets.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Sarma, who is heading the education department for the first time, said the steps being taken by the Congress-led Tarun Gogoi government since the beginning of its third straight term, starting this May, will help achieve the desired level of competitiveness.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Since Dispur will be spending an additional Rs 3,000 crore annually on salary of fresh and regularised teachers from next fiscal, it will severely impact other development programmes, Sarma said.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Currently, Dispur spends Rs 600 crore a year on salary.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The steps being taken by the government will not only see an exodus of teachers from private to government schools but will also force the private sector to improve their working conditions. “Introduction of the teacher eligibility test will not only help us get quality teachers, it will also help improve the lot of private school teachers. They will be offered good salary by their management to retain their services. The overall scenario will improve,” he said. <a href="http://www.telegraphindia.com/1111119/jsp/northeast/story_14770140.jsp#top" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322707605511498275.post-33585902139223331292011-11-19T16:40:00.001+05:302011-11-19T16:42:40.284+05:30What is Distance Education

What is Distance Education

About Distance Education

There are
two systems of correspondence education: 1. the regular system, and 2.
the open system. In the regular system, the qualification requirements
for enrolment are similar to those prescribed for the normal university
courses. In the open system, the courses are open to any person who may
not even possess any formal qualifications. But in some institutions they
should have attained the age of 18 years for under-gradate and diploma
courses and 21 years for postgraduate courses. Enrolment in some courses
is subject to qualifying in a written examination.

Benefits
of Distance Education

It is inexpensive.
The employment market is highly competitive and the best jobs go to persons
possessing requisite qualifications. In
many organisations, getting promotions depend on the possession of higher
qualifications. The correspondence courses provide them opportunities
to enhance their qualifications. In
particular, distance education is a boon to housewives, who can use their
precious leisure time to enhance their educational qualifications and
employment potential.
Distance
education is imparted by three kinds of institutions:

Departments
of Correspondence Courses in universities and university level institutions

Open
Universities exclusively involved in imparting higher education through
the distance mode, and

A large
number of private institutions mostly offering professional courses.

Nature of
Distance Learning Courses

Distance
education institutions offer courses at different levels: first degree,
postgraduate degree, diploma and postgraduate diploma, certificate and
even research degree (M.Phil.
and Ph.D). The courses cover
a wide variety of subjects. Apart from the traditional courses in Arts,
Science and Commerce, both at first degree and postgraduate degree levels,
a large number of professional courses at different levels are also offered.
They include teacher education, library and information science, journalism
and mass communication, nursing, management and its different branches,
computer and information technology and several branches of science, computer
and information technology.

Quality
of Distance Learning Courses

The success
of distance learning courses rests, among others, on three major factors

high
quality, well structured instructional material both in print and electronic
media,

Use of
distance learning technologies based on new communication and information
technologies,

adequate
guidance and counselling at study centres.

Studying online through distance learning Australia is an excellent way
to bring study direct to your home. This makes it possible to adjust
your study and learning schedule to fit your individual requirements,
allowing a high degree of flexibility for whatever academic program you
decide to pursuue.

Distance Learing in Australia covers most
academic areas, ranging from hobby courses, to certificates and
diplomas, right up to postgraduate work including MBA online and DBA
and other postgraduate studies.

There are a variety of ways that students are able to complete their
studies through distance learning. The main feature of these is that in
general students are not required to be physically present in the
classroom, and this gives them the freedom to study where and when they
want. A small minority of programs regarded as being delivered in the
distance learning mode still require some face to face contact, but
this is mainly at the higher tertiary level to ensure certain skills
and knowledge is being communicated and the enhance the learning
experience.

Over the years there have been various approaches to this type of
study, including the use of written material, videos, audiotapes, and
CD-ROMs. More recently there has been a shift to the use of email and
the Internet, and now many distance programs are also called 'study
online' because of this primary method of communication.

This guide is being developed to bring you the best of Australia's
Distance Learing programs, not just those offered through the
universities, but all programs that students of all levels, experience
and requirements may find useful.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday launched the Right to Education Mission in the state on 13 Nov, 2011 coinciding with the National Education Day. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gogoi said his government has all along laid emphasis on education right from the primary to university level.

“It is through education alone that a state or a society can forge ahead on all fronts. Education dispels darkness and spreads the light of knowledge,” he said.

Gogoi said the adoption of Right to Education as one of the fundamental rights by the UPA Government has been an epoch-making event that could bring about a sea change in not only the education sector but also usher in development on all fronts.

He said his government would vigorously implement the Right to Education to bring about a total transformation in all spheres of life. He exhorted the teachers to dedicate themselves in imparting proper education to the children for the benefit of the state.

The Chief Minister underscored the need for reducing the drop-out rates to increase the enrolment in schools. He said that the government would go in for further expansion of the much-popular Gyanjyoti Scheme in the state. He announced a scheme on the lines of Gyanjyoti for teachers to give them the much-needed educational exposure.

“Like Gyanjyoti scheme for students, teachers will be taken out to good educational institutions where they will get the opportunity to see how lessons are being imparted to the students. In this way, they will be able to hone their teaching skills for greater benefit of the students,” he said.

Gogoi said his government was contemplating awarding extra bonus and letter of commendation to teachers who have performed well. He also stressed on the need for motivating the parents so that a congenial atmosphere for education prevails at home.

Addressing the meeting, state Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the launching of ‘Right to Education’ campaign was a red-letter day in the annals of education in the state. He urged upon the teachers to dedicate themselves fully towards implementing the mission in letter and spirit. Dr Sarma said that the process is on to make provincial arrangements for 95,000 posts in venture schools. He said that there will be no shortage of teachers after filling up of 50,000 posts following the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET). He said the Education Department has tied up with ISRO for starting an education centre in Guwahati linking up with about 5,000 ME schools for effective imparting of teaching skills.

Situated on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra, Guwahati is Assam's sleepy capital. It was once known as "Pragiyotishpura" or Light of the East. The name Guwahati is a combination of two words: Guwa meaning areca nut and Hat meaning market. Guwahati or Gurahati is the gateway to one of the most exotic and fascinating regions of India - the north east. Today, Guwahati is the business hub of the region and also Assam's largest city. It is the service centre for the oil industry and tea plantations; the world's largest tea auctions are held here. There are many ancient Hindu temples in and around Guwahati. Notable among them is the Umananda temple on Peacock Island dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, eight km west of the city is believed to be an ancient 'Khasi' sacrificial site. It has been a part and parcel of Assamese life and culture from ancient times. The temple dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshya is one of the oldest and most sacred centre for Shakti worship and Tantric Hinduism. The original 10th century temple was destroyed by Muslim converts but was rebuilt in 1665 by King Naranarayana of Koch Bihar. The sikhara or spire is in the shape of a beehive and it has the nymph motifs and the long turtle back hall. The stone images and other relics found around the temple have been dated by archaeologists to the eighth century onwards. It attracts pilgrims from all over India, especially during the Ambubachi Festival which usually falls around July. The ponds here are home to some giant turtles. There is a majestic view of the city and the Brahmaputra river from the hill top. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the sanctum.
