When it comes to education in the northeastern part of India, Schools in Assam deserves a special mention. Assam has a literacy rate of 64.28% and Guwahati is the major center of learning in the region. Over the years, the state government has taken up several measures to enhance the standard of education in Assam. It has introduced free and compulsory education for all students up to 14 years of age. In addition, the department of education has also introduced a common academic calendar and unit tests for 10th standard students.
Vigorous monitoring of the educational institutes has also ensured quality education at the school level in the state. However, the education scenario is not too good in the tribal regions where 75% of the tribal women are still illiterate.

The schools in Assam are either private or run by government. Most of the schools in Assam are equipped with modern infrastructure and facilities. Residential and convent schools are also there for the students to join. The schools are affiliated to either Assam Council of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or CBSE or ICSE.

The steps taken by Assam for education may see the state as one
of the pioneering education states in India.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday launched the Right to Education Mission in the state on 13 Nov, 2011 coinciding with the National Education Day. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gogoi said his government has all along laid emphasis on education right from the primary to university level.
“It is through education alone that a state or a society can forge ahead on all fronts. Education dispels darkness and spreads the light of knowledge,” he said.
Gogoi said the adoption of Right to Education as one of the fundamental rights by the UPA Government has been an epoch-making event that could bring about a sea change in not only the education sector but also usher in development on all fronts.
He said his government would vigorously implement the Right to Education to bring about a total transformation in all spheres of life. He exhorted the teachers to dedicate themselves in imparting proper education to the children for the benefit of the state.
